If you’re selling (or planning to sell) on Amazon or other e-commerce platforms, you’ve probably come across terms like Seller Model and Vendor Model.
But hereโs the reality most blogs donโt tell you ๐
On Amazon India, thereโs a third, highly important model that drives massive scale:
๐ Strategic Sellers (B2B2C Model) โ like VRP Telematics, Cocoblu Retail, Etrade Online, Clicktech Retail
In this blog, we’ll break down all three models in a simple, practical way so you can decide what’s right for your brand — including the real, sourced story of who these “strategic sellers” actually are (it’s more interesting, and less mysterious, than most posts on this topic let on).
1. What is the Seller Model (Marketplace Model)?
In the Seller Model, you (the brand) sell directly to customers through Amazonโs marketplace.
How it works:
- You list products on Amazon (via Seller Central)
- Customers place orders
- You fulfill orders (or use FBA)
- Amazon charges commission & fees
Key Features:
- โ Full control over pricing
- โ Control over ads & listings
- โ Higher margin potential
- โ Operational complexity
- โ Inventory risk
Amazon India’s current referral fees for third-party sellers range from 0% to 30% of the item price depending on category (many categories under ₹1,000 carry 0% referral fee as a small-seller incentive; premium categories like drones over ₹1,000 sit at the top of the range) — the official, current fee schedule is published at sell.amazon.in/fees-and-pricing, which also lists a fee revision effective September 7, 2026, so always check the live page rather than a cached screenshot before pricing a listing.10 Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) and Seller Flex (Amazon’s hybrid model using your own warehouse under Amazon’s fulfillment SLAs) remain the two current official fulfillment options under the Seller Model.10
๐ Best for: Brands focused on profitability, control, and experimentation
2. What is the Vendor Model (Wholesale Model)?
In the Vendor Model, you sell products directly to Amazon, and Amazon sells them to customers.
How it works:
- Amazon raises a Purchase Order (PO)
- You supply inventory at a wholesale price
- Amazon handles pricing, delivery, and customer experience
Key Features:
- โ Predictable demand (PO-based)
- โ Lower operational burden
- โ No pricing control
- โ Lower margins
- โ Limited visibility on customer data
๐ Best for: Brands focused on scale and operational simplicity
3. The Hidden Layer: Strategic Sellers on Amazon
Now comes the most important (and often ignored) part.
Youโll often see sellers like:
- Cocoblu Retail
- VRP Telematics
- Etrade Online
- Clicktech Retail
selling the same branded products on Amazon.
So who are they?
These are large-scale third-party sellers who:
- Buy inventory from brands in bulk (B2B)
- Sell to customers on Amazon (B2C)
- Operate at a much larger scale than normal sellers
๐ This model is called:
Strategic Seller Model (B2B2C Model)
4. How the Strategic Seller Model Works
Flow:
- Brand sells inventory to a strategic seller (like Cocoblu)
- Seller lists products on Amazon
- Seller manages pricing, stock, and fulfillment (mostly via FBA)
- Customer purchases on Amazon
๐ In short:
Brand โ Strategic Seller โ Amazon โ Customer
5. Who These Sellers Actually Are — the Real, Sourced Story
This is the part most posts on this topic get wrong or skip entirely, so it’s worth being precise about it.
None of the four sellers named above are Amazon-owned. India’s FDI rules bar a foreign-owned marketplace like Amazon from holding equity in a seller that sells on its own platform, so what actually exists is a “preferred seller” relationship, not ownership:
- Cocoblu Retail is a wholly-owned subsidiary of RattanIndia Enterprises, a listed Indian conglomerate — it took over the fashion/apparel business of Cloudtail (Amazon’s former largest seller) when Cloudtail wound down in 2022.1,2
- Clicktech Retail is backed by the Dalmia Bharat Group. In April 2024 it acquired the retail business of Appario Retail (Amazon’s other historically Amazon-affiliated large seller), a deal the Competition Commission of India formally cleared on July 24, 2024 — a transaction that explicitly moved that business out of Amazon’s equity structure, not into it.3,4
- Etrade Online, founded in 2010, is an independently owned multi-brand reseller with no Amazon equity link found in any public filing or reporting.5
- VRP Telematics is an independently, family-owned (Gupta family) distributor operating as an exclusive-category strategic distributor for watches and jewellery, with FY24 revenue of ₹2,363.69 crore per a CARE Ratings credit report.6
What Amazon actually gets from these relationships is preferential terms in exchange for scale and reliability — not ownership:
- Ensure high product availability across a huge SKU base
- Maintain competitive pricing at scale
- Scale categories faster than onboarding thousands of small sellers would allow
These sellers often win the Buy Box more frequently and operate with strong fill rates and supply-chain efficiency — which is exactly why brands sometimes choose to route inventory through them for reach, even while giving up some margin and control.
What actually happened to Cloudtail and Appario
If you’ve read about Amazon India’s seller ecosystem before, you may have seen Cloudtail India and Appario Retail mentioned — these were Amazon’s two historically best-known equity-affiliated sellers, and their story is the real background to why “strategic sellers” exist as a category today:
- Cloudtail India (a joint venture involving Amazon and Catamaran, N.R. Narayana Murthy’s investment vehicle) announced in August 2021 it would wind down, and formally ceased operations by April 2022, following the same FDI-compliance pressure that shaped this whole category.2,7
- Appario Retail was slated for delisting by Amazon in 2022, but instead its retail business was acquired by Clicktech Retail in April 2024 (CCI-cleared July 2024) — the deal discussed above.3,8
- Amazon’s actual current equity-affiliated seller is a separate, newer entity called Frontizo Business Services, in which Amazon Asia-Pacific Holdings holds a 76% stake — also CCI-cleared in July 2024.9 Frontizo, not the four sellers named earlier in this post, is the closest thing to a “true” Amazon-owned seller operating on Amazon.in today.
One more accuracy note: “Strategic Seller Model” and “B2B2C” are not official Amazon program names — you won’t find them in Amazon’s Seller Central documentation. They’re informal industry shorthand (used on this site and elsewhere) for describing large third-party resellers who buy in bulk and sell at scale. Useful for understanding the market, just not something to quote as an official Amazon term in a pitch deck or vendor conversation.
